Japan: Issue Advocacy and Reputation Management

The Challenge

A major consumer finance company sought to mitigate the negative impact of impending legislation on its business in Japan. A key challenge was to reach this objective while not provoking backlash from Japanese politicians, regulators, media, or the general public given the politically sensitive subject matter.

The ASG Approach

We developed a carefully balanced and multi-faceted action plan designed to garner support for our client’s position and help drive critical policy reforms. Both objectives required consensus-building efforts aimed at key Japanese decision-makers and public influencers. We worked on the ground in Tokyo to execute a campaign that advocated our client’s position to the Japanese government at both senior and working levels. Message platforms targeted important political leaders and senior officials, while other key stakeholders and influencers were also engaged on an individual basis. Our client also leveraged U.S. government advocacy to reinforce these messages in talks between the relevant U.S. officials and Japanese financial authorities.

The Result

Despite intense political support for the new policy, our efforts substantially mitigated its negative impacts, while our nuanced approach to advocacy and outreach maintained our client’s respected reputation in the Japanese financial community.
